Rachel Whittaker is a lecturer in the English Department of the Arts Faculty at the UAM and coordinator of the Masters Programme in English Applied Linguistics there. She wrote her Ph.D. on reading processes including a functional linguistic perspective (Textualidad y Comprensión de Textos. Textuality and Text Comprehension 1991) and has always been interested in the application of linguistics to literacy and its problems. She teaches reading in English as a foreign language from a linguistic perspective, academic writing using the Systemic-Functional/SF genre model, and discourse analysis with a specific focus on register and genre in the English Department, as well as a genre approach to the language of the disciplines in the Master for teacher trainees in the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education. She has collaborated on research projects on reading involving groups of Spanish teachers working with researchers at the Psychology Faculty at the UAM, and projects on writing in English as a Foreign Language and on the language of the school disciplines, from a functional linguistics perspective.
