Dr Philippe Vitale

Philippe Vitale is senior lecturer in Sociology at Aix-Marseille University (Aix en Provence, France). He is notably member of the National Committee of French Universities and in charge of the ‘knowledge, education and culture’ department of the Mediterranean Laboratory of Sociology (LAMES-CNRS-MMSH). His doctoral work focused on the teaching of sociology in Europe and was co-directed by Basil Bernstein and Roger Establet. He translated, with Ginette Ramognino-le-Déroff, Bernstein’s last book ‘Pedagogy, symbolic control, and identity’ (PUL, 2007) and co-edited with Daniel Frandji ‘Knowledge, Pedagogy and Society. International perspectives of Basil Bernstein’s sociology of education’ (2012, 2nd ed.). His work combines focuses on education and the sociology of knowledge and culture.
